¡Qué primavera fabulosa hemos tenido aquí en la escuela!

Nuestros estudiantes definitivamente han estado hacienda su parte de "tikkun olam", o arreglando el mundo a través de acción social.

What a fabulous spring we have had here at the school!.

Our students have definitely been doing their part of tikkun olam, or repairing the world through social action.

Hubo una colección de juguetes para "Consejo", una agencia local de servicio social que sirve a comunidades latinas en nuestra región. Nuestras familias trajeron muchos juguetes y un grupo de la escuela fue a "Consejo" con los juguetes en mano, y después de hacer un tour de la organización cada estudiante tomó un juguete y pidió un deseo para el próximo niño que lo va a recibir, y se fueron los juguetes….tan lejos como Yakima. Nuestros niños demostraron mucha generosidad y el sentido verdadero de compartir y tomar turnos. ¡Gracias a Mario y sus colegas!

There was the toy collection we did for Consejo, a local social service agency serving the Latino communities in our region. Families brought in many toys and we went to Consejo as a school with the toys in hand and after touring the organization each student held a toy and put a wish into it for the next child to receive and off the toys went…as far away as Yakima. Our children demonstrated much generosity and the true meaning of sharing and taking turns. Thank you to Mario and colleagues!

Hemos empezado un proyecto de comida y conciencia sobre malgasto en lo cual hemos estado hablando con los niños de "consigue lo que comes y come lo que consigues" basado en el modelo del excelente programa en Islandwood en la isla de "Bainbridge". Estamos aprendiendo del malgasto de comida, y basura y reciclaje, con la intención de reducir ambos la cantidad de comida que se malgasta tanto como la basura que estamos contribuyendo a nuestro planeta. Un artista local excelente, Josh Levine, nos construyó una pesa fabulosa que los niños usan para pesar su comida y basura al final de las comidas y entonces hablamos de maneras creativas para reducir esto cada día. Una idea es ser conciente de lo que usamos para empacar nuestra comida. Miren al http://www.wastefreelunches.org. Otra idea fue.. ¿qué tal una caja de lombrices? Otra vez la estupenda Lisa Taylor de "Seattle Tilth" nos ayudó y nos construyó una caja fabulosa de lombrices que ahora es el recipiente de todos los desechos "vegan", incluyendo las toallas de papel de las horas de comer de Prescolar. Mientras los niños estan cosechando comida de la huerta estas ideas de ciclos de vida se practican. También conseguimos un barríl para la lluvia para ser concientes de nuestro suministro de agua en la área de Seattle. La lluvia que coleccionamos nos ayudará a regar nuestras dos huertas fabulosas a través del calor del verano.

We have started a food and waste mindfulness project in which we are talking with the children about "taking what you eat and eating what you take" modeled after the great program it Islandwood on Bainbridge Island. We are learning about food waste and trash and recycling with the intention of reducing both the amount of food that goes to waste as well as the trash we are contributing to our planet. A wonderful local artist, Josh Levine, made us a fabulous scale that the children use to weigh their food and trash waste at the end of meals and then we talk about creative ways to reduce this each day. One idea is being thoughtful about what we pack our food in. Check out http://www.wastefreelunches.org. Another was how about a worm bin??? Once again the tremendous Lisa Taylor from Seattle Tilth hooked us up and made a great worm bin for us that is now the recipient of all vegan scraps including paper towels from Prescolar meal times. As the children are harvesting food from the garden these notions of lifecycles are really being practiced. Also we got a rain barrel to be thoughtful about our water supply in the Seattle area. The rain we collect will help us water our fabulous two gardens throughout the summer heat.

Ahora tenemos una caja de “Tzedakah” en lo cual nuestras familias ponen monedas y que donamos el penúltimo día de la escuela. Nuestros estudiantes votaron donar el dinero al fondo "Give Burns the Boot" através de los bomberos en "Columbia City". Presentando su $13.25 en persona, fueron recibidos por un bombero muy agradecido quien les explicó como su donación ayudará a niños quemados.

We now have a Tzedakah box where our families put change and which we donated on the second to the last day of school. Our students voted to give the money to the Give Burns the Boot fund via the firefighters in Columbia City. Presenting their $13.25 in person, they were greeted by a very grateful firefighter who explained to them how their donations would help children who had been burned.

Y en cuanto a contribuir a la paz mundial en un nivel energético, hemos empezado a estudiar "Qigong". Gracias a Marc por enseñarnos este ejercicio. "Qigong" es,

Steeped in shamanic, Taoist and Buddhist practices, the Zhong Yuan Qigong (ZY Qigong) system integrates the physical, energy and spiritual anatomies. It is one of the most complete development systems in the world. Its teachings and learning come from the entire universe." (from the Zy Qigong handbook).

Late breaking news!!!!!
After three years of what seemed to be an endless process, Prescolar Alice Francis has received its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. Elizabeth Stephan and her colleagues at Stoel Rives are to thank for this accomplishment.
